How To Repair LCD Monitors
Lately, I have been finding more and more LCD monitors and flat screen TVs in the trash or for $1 at flea markets and garage sales. All of these are broken but in 4 out of 5 cases I was able to repair them for under $5 and then resell them as refurbished. I have 100% positive feedback.
I used to do this with good old fashioned TV sets. People would throw them out thinking they were broken and I would pick them up, replace a 25 cent fuse and 1 out of 2 would fire right up and be resellable. With LCD monitors, it’s still easy but you have to know the tricks.![]()
Jestine Yong’s course on LCD Monitor Repair is perfect. If you like tinkering with electronics to see how they work then you can definitely learn from this course. It’s got a bunch of bonus material and reference material and it’s the same stuff Jestine teaches professionally at his school. At less than $50, you will make it back on the first monitor that you fix and resell.

LCD Monitor Repair Exploded Chip on Inverter Board
This was a TV repair but the parts involved are the same as those found in LCD monitors.
42″ LCD HDTV by Vizio suddenly had no picture. Sound still worked fine and you could change channels but the screen remained blank.

As with an LCD Monitor, the first test was to see if the light was getting proper power from the inverter board (which turns the DC to AC and increases the voltage to the amount that the light needs to operate).
This model has two inverter boards set up as a MASTER and a SLAVE. They were not outputting any voltage. While checking the boards for blown capacitors (always my first suspect with a bad inverter) I found that one of the microchips had exploded on the SLAVE board.
Here’s a picture of it…

It literally blew out the pin and some of the chip’s casing material. As you can see there are no burn marks that you would expect to see if this was caused by arcing. I therefore believe that there was the tiniest bit of moisture inside the chip and after a few months, the temperature reached the point where it popped like a popcorn kernel.
Anyway, found a replacement board on eBay for $80 and it has been fine for over 3 months now.
First time I’ve seen something like that without burn marks.
If you have any idea what caused this, please comment on this post.
I’d like to thank Justine Yong and his course on LCD Monitor Repair

LCD Monitor Repair Trash to Cash
I’ve been repairing and troubleshooting LCD monitors for years now and the dead ones or the ones beyond hope of repair piled up in my garage and basement. When I finally got around to going through the piles, I found a ton of good stuff that I was completely missing out on.
I had many that I l knew had good power supply boards but something else on it was shot. I have many with good screens or good backlights. So what I did was I spent an entire weekend taking out the good parts and throwing away the rest.

I bought some of those 20 gallon plastic containers with lids at Walmart for about $5 a piece and I put screens in a few of them, I filled a couple more containers with power supplies and so on. I even rolled up and saved all of the power cords. I must have over 200 power cords
When I was done, I had eight neatly stacked plastic boxes in the garage with over $5000 worth of parts in them that I had collected for free. It is rare for me to find a broken LCD monitor or TV that I can not fix with parts in those baskets and then resell for 100% profit. Check out Jestine Young for more info…
